Common Hoopoe

Scientific Name: Upupa epops

Malay Name: Hudhud Biasa

Chinese Name: 戴胜

Alternative Name(s): Eurasian Hoopoe

Range: Migratory populations have a widespread breeding range from Europe to Korea, and descend to lower latitudes in Asia and Africa during winter. Resident populations occur throughout Africa across the Middle East to India and Southeast Asia. In Southeast Asia, breeds at least south to northern Peninsular Malaysia. 

Taxonomy: Polytypic. Subspecies are: epops, saturata, ceylonensis, longirostris, major, senegalensis, waibeli, africana.

Size: 25-27 cm

Identification: Highly distinctive bird with a cinnamon-buff body, long downcurved black bill, and a prominent black-tipped crest. When extended, crest is fan-shaped. Wings and tail are black with broad white bars.

Habitat: Parkland, open country, lightly wooded areas.

Behaviour/Ecology: Often seen foraging on the ground by probing soil for insects. 

Local Status: Probable vagrant or escapee

Conservation Status: Least Concern (BirdLife International 2020)
